Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic α-helical cytokine that plays important roles as a central player in the regulation of inflammation, haematopoiesis, immune response and host defense mechanisms. There is substantial evidence that defects in the IL-6 family can negatively impact the body’s response against bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Previous research has suggested that elevated IL-6 is associated with a higher mortality in subjects with community-acquired pneumonia.
