Proteins and peptides are used in research in a variety of roles including growth factors and cytokines for cell culture, active enzymes for biochemical assays, carrier proteins for movement of molecules, inhibitors for blocking pathways, and antigens for use with antibodies.

Blocking peptides are comprised of synthetically prepared short amino acid segments and can be used in experiments involving antibodies for confirming antibody specificity. Recombinant proteins can come purified from E. coli, mammalian cells, or even from cell-free methods.
