IAP (inhibitor of apoptosis protein) is an evolutionarily-conserved inhibitory factor of apoptosis. IAP directly binds to caspase which plays the central role in operation of apoptosis and inhibits it. Human XIAP (X-chromosome-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein) is known as one of the IAP family and binds to caspase-3, 7, and 9 directly and inhibits their functions. XIAP has three BIR (baculovirus IAP repeat) domains. It is confirmed that BIR2 domain binds to caspase-3 and 7, and BIR3 domain binds to caspase-9. Also it has known that the RING finger domain has a ubiquitin ligase activity and is associated with ubiquitination of caspase. For research use only, not for use in diagnostic procedures.
